The short version

Your child's work stays on your own phone or computer. We do not have a copy of it. We cannot see your child's scores, and nothing about your child is sent to us unless you choose to send it.

The same is true of a teacher's mark book and papers: the marks, the answers and the pupils' names stay on the teacher's own device. The one thing our server keeps for a teacher is the question paper itself, when the teacher sends it to pupils as a short link — questions only, never anything about a pupil.

Which apps this covers

This notice applies to all nineteen of our apps:

They are built the same way and handle information in the same way, which is why one notice serves them all. Each app keeps its own separate store on your device, so one app cannot see another's work — the one exception is described under "Marks for a teacher" below.

What we ask for, and why

In the learning apps

When a learner is set up, the app asks for:

That is all a family is asked for to start. A parent's, guardian's or adult learner's email address is asked for only if a grown-up chooses to pay, so that the receipt reaches them — with a link that puts the plan back on a new phone. Nothing else in the apps needs one.

We deliberately do not ask for a child's email address, photograph, school, location or any other detail about them.

In the mark book

The mark book is a teacher's record book, so it necessarily holds more — and it is worth being exact about it:

All of it stays on the teacher's own device. It is never uploaded to us, and we have no way of reading it. A school using the mark book remains responsible for its own duties towards the pupils whose marks are recorded.

When a teacher presses Send on a report, the app hands the words to the teacher's own messaging or email app. The teacher chooses who receives it, and can read every word before it goes. Nothing passes through us.

In the paper maker

The paper maker holds the teacher's name and school, the papers and readings the teacher makes, and the answers pupils send back. All of that stays on the teacher's own device.

When a teacher sends a paper or a reading to pupils as a short link, our server keeps the pupil's copy of it for about six months, so that the link opens on a pupil's phone. For a paper that copy is the questions only — never the answers, the mark scheme, or anything about any pupil. A reading is practice that marks itself on the pupil's phone, so its copy also carries its answers. To stop the service being misused, our server counts how many papers come from one internet address in an hour; that count is thrown away after the hour.

A pupil's answers go back to the teacher as a message the pupil sends, from their own WhatsApp or email — not through us. A timed paper keeps the pupil's answers so far and the starting time on the pupil's phone for two days, so the clock survives a phone being put down; nothing else is written to a pupil's phone.

Marks for a teacher

A learning app's report has a button, Send my marks to my teacher. It writes a short message holding the learner's first name and weekly scores, which the family sends from their own messaging app if they choose. On a teacher's own device, the mark book can also read the weekly scores that the learning apps on that same device have recorded. It only reads them; it never changes them, and nothing passes through us.

The microphone, in one app only

Wake English.Exams.Ap lets a learner practise speaking for IELTS, TOEFL and similar tests. If the learner allows it, the app records their answer into the phone's memory so they can play it back. The recording is never sent anywhere and never saved: it is wiped the moment they move to the next question or leave the screen. No other app uses the microphone, and saying no still leaves the practice clock and the model answers.

Reading aloud

Several apps read words, sentences or listening practice aloud. They use the voices already built into your phone or computer. What is read is the app's own lesson text — never anything about the learner.

Where the work is kept

Everything the apps record — scores, times, which questions a child finds hard, stickers earned, and in the mark book the marks themselves — is stored inside the browser on the device you use. It is not uploaded to us and we have no way of reading it.

This has one consequence you should know about: if you clear your browser's data, or change phones, that history is erased. Every app lets you save a backup file (Settings → Save a backup) and bring it back later. We suggest saving one at the end of every school term.

When information does reach us

Only when you choose to send it:

We also keep a record of each payment so that a subscription can be put back on a new phone if yours is lost, and so that we can answer a question about what you bought. After a payment we send a receipt by email, and one reminder about a week before the plan ends; these are sent for us by an email company, Resend, which receives your email address and the letter for that purpose only.

When a plan or an activation code is used on a phone, the app sends our server a random device number it made up for itself, so that one plan cannot be spread over more phones than it covers. It says nothing about who you are.

Other companies your device contacts

The apps have no analytics and no advertising, but two ordinary web requests are worth being straight with you about:

Once an app has been added to your home screen it runs offline, and nothing at all leaves the device.

What we never do

How long we keep things

Your child's work, and a teacher's marks and papers, stay on your device until you erase them — which you can do at any time from Settings. A paper or reading sent as a short link is kept on our server for about six months and then deleted. Emails you send us are kept for as long as we need them to help you, and payment records for as long as Ghanaian tax law requires.

Your rights

You may ask us at any time what information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Write to wakelearningapps@gmail.com and we will respond within 30 days.

Because a child's learning history and a teacher's marks live on your device rather than ours, you already control them directly — you can export or erase them yourself, without asking us.

Children

Most of the learning apps are made for children, and are designed to be set up and supervised by a parent, guardian or teacher. Subscriptions, reports, settings and support all sit behind a simple sum that a young child is not expected to answer, so a child cannot spend money or send messages on their own.

The mark book and the paper maker are not for children at all. They are a teacher's tools, and the mark book offers a four-figure lock for a phone that may be put down in a staff room. A pupil who opens a paper link sees the paper and nothing else.

Changes

If we change how any of this works, we will update this notice and tell subscribers by email before the change takes effect.
