A learner who does not know the words of a lesson cannot follow it. This app teaches the key words of each BECE subject β English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science, Social Studies, Religious and Moral Education, Computing, Career Technology, and Creative Arts and Design β and of seventeen Ghana SHS subjects, from Mathematics and the sciences to Accounting, Government and Literature-in-English, and of eighteen Cambridge IGCSE courses, from Physics and Additional Mathematics to Enterprise and First Language English, and of thirteen Cambridge AS & A Level subjects, from the sciences and Mathematics to Accounting and Sociology, and of fifteen IB Diploma subjects, from Physics to Psychology and the two English A courses, and of seventeen AP subjects, from Calculus and the sciences to the three histories, and the Mathematics, English and Science of Cambridge Primary and Lower Secondary (Stages 1 to 9) and the IB PYP and MYP 1 to 3, and the fifteen University first-year courses, from Pre-Calculus to Introduction to Engineering, ten at a time, sorted by kind: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs and terms of two or more words.
For every word it shows how to say it (the phone reads it aloud, and the syllables are written with the strong one in capitals), what kind of word it is, its meaning as the lessons use it, a sentence from the lesson where it appears, what it means at home when that is different, and which Wake apps use it.
It is for learners of 8 and over: JHS pupils sitting the BECE, SHS students sitting WASSCE, and students sitting Cambridge IGCSE and AS & A Level, IB Diploma students and AP students, and younger pupils in Cambridge Primary and Lower Secondary and the IB PYP and MYP, with a grown-up beside the youngest, and first-year university students.
β² Back to the contentsThe app runs in a web browser, but it is meant to live on the home screen like any other app. On Android, open it in Chrome, tap the three dots and choose Add to Home screen or Install app. On iPhone, open it in Safari, tap the share button and choose Add to Home Screen.
Once it is there it opens full screen and works with no internet at all.
Opening the file inside WhatsApp, Gmail or a file manager shows a preview, and previews do not run apps: the buttons will not respond. Ask for the web link rather than the file, and open it in Chrome or Safari.
Tap Add a learner, then give a first name, an age and a picture. No email is asked for, nothing is paid, and the app opens at once. Up to five learners can share one phone.
Nothing is locked. The lessons are numbered in a sensible order, but you can open any of them at any time.
β² Back to the contentsChoose a subject, then a set. The first page lists its ten words; then each word has a page of its own. Tap π to hear the word and π’ slowly to hear it slowly. The phone's voice is good but not perfect: the written syllables are the guide.
After the last page, Start the drill. Every word gets a meaning question and a spelling question: the phone says the word and gives its meaning, and the learner types it. Capital letters do not matter. After every answer the app shows why it is right.
On the home screen, Find a word searches every key word as you type β by the word, part of it, or words from its meaning ("bottom number" finds denominator). Tap a word to open its page.
On the home screen, Before a lesson lets you choose a subject and then the lesson you are about to study in its Wake app (type part of its name to find it). The app shows the key words that lesson uses, the most used first. Learn them and drill them before you open the lesson, and the lesson is far easier to follow. Add them all to my list keeps them for later.
On the home screen, Word families shows related words together, such as produce, product, production, productive, productivity. Each family has one page: every word's kind, how to say it, its meaning and a sentence using it, then the pattern that builds the family. The drill asks which word fits a gap in a sentence (the "right form" question examinations set), which word is the noun or adjective, and how to spell the hardest one. The first lesson explains the endings that make each kind of word. There are three sets: for younger learners, for SHS and IGCSE, and for A Level, IB, AP and university. A word's own page also names its family, and Find a word shows the family at the top.
Tap β beside a word, or β Add to my list on its page, to gather the words a learner finds hard. My list on the home screen shows them and drills them together, meaning and spelling. A teacher can also set spelling and meaning tests on these word lists with Wake Read.Drill.Quiz.Exam.Ap.
About four in ten questions in a round are drawn from what that learner has missed before. Mixed revision draws questions from every set started.
β² Back to the contentsReports, Settings, Support and the class dashboard sit behind a multiplication question. It is not security; it simply stops a report or a setting being changed by accident.
My chart shows scores over time and a board of every lesson, green where it is secure. Questions I miss lists the questions this learner gets wrong most often, with a button to practise exactly those.
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Questions per round | 5, 10, 15 or 20. A lesson's drill never repeats a question to fill a round. |
| Way of speaking and voice | Which accent and voice read the questions aloud. |
| Sounds | Turns the tones off. |
| Animations | Turns off movement. |
| Bring back questions I missed more often | Weaves past mistakes back into rounds. Leave it on. |
The report is written from the learner's own recorded answers: drills done, accuracy, each lesson, a chart, the questions missed most, and recommendations. You can print it, save it as a PDF, email it or send it on WhatsApp. It is not a school grade.
β² Back to the contentsA new learner gets a 7-day free trial with no card. After that a grown-up chooses a plan: GHβ΅15 a month or GHβ΅150 a year for up to three learners, or GHβ΅700 a year for a class of up to forty. Payment is made through Paystack (mobile money or card), and a grown-up's email is asked for only then, for the receipt. A code from your school or from us can be typed in instead.
β² Back to the contentsAlmost always the browser's data was cleared, or the app was opened in a different browser. Results live in the browser that made them. Restore from a backup β see the next chapter.
Close every tab of the app and open it again, with internet on.
Tell us through Support, saying which lesson and question.
β² Back to the contentsEvery result lives in this browser on this device, and nowhere else. Nothing is uploaded to us. That keeps a learner's work private β and it means that clearing the browser, changing phone or reinstalling will lose it unless you have saved a backup.
Settings β Save a backup writes a small file to the device. Email it to yourself and it is safe. To bring it back: Settings β Restore from a backup. If the learner already exists on the device, the copy with more history is kept.
Settings β Clear results wipes that learner's scores but keeps the learner. Settings β Erase this pupil removes the learner and everything they did. It cannot be undone, so save a backup first.
