Schools that follow Cambridge teach Cambridge Primary (Stages 1 to 6) and Cambridge Lower Secondary (Stages 7 to 9). Pupils sit the Cambridge Checkpoint tests at the end of Stage 6 and Stage 9. This app teaches those programmes one short lesson at a time, with practice after every lesson and an explanation after every answer.
It is for pupils in Stages 1 to 9, about five to fourteen. Every subject is in one app, for one price, each in its own folder on the home screen. A young pupil will need a grown-up to read with them.
It does not mark writing. Marking an essay properly needs a person, and the only other way would be to send the pupil's work to an outside company, which this app never does. Instead it gives the task, a clock, a word count, a model answer and a checklist, and a button to send the writing to a teacher.
It does not copy past papers: its passages and questions are its own, written to the examination's published format. And its report describes work done in the app; it is not an examination result.
The app runs in a web browser, but it is meant to live on the home screen like any other app. On Android, open it in Chrome, tap the three dots and choose Add to Home screen or Install app. On iPhone, open it in Safari, tap the share button and choose Add to Home Screen.
Once it is there it opens full screen and works with no internet at all.
Opening the file inside WhatsApp, Gmail or a file manager shows a preview, and previews do not run apps: the buttons will not respond. Ask for the web link rather than the file, and open it in Chrome or Safari.
Tap Add a learner, then give a first name, an age and a picture. No email is asked for, and the free trial starts at once. Before it ends the app shows the plans; when it ends it offers a few more free days, once. An email is asked for only if you choose to pay, because the receipt goes there.
Nothing is locked. The lessons are numbered in a sensible order, but a learner whose examination is close can go straight to the skill they need most.
One lesson a day, five days a week, and one writing task each week. Read every page, and read the explanation after every answer β including the ones you got right. Use earphones for listening practice.
β² Back to the contentsEach subject follows Cambridge's own published curriculum framework for Stages 1 to 9. Each has its own folder on the home screen: tap a folder to see its parts, and β All subjects to come back.
| Subject | What is in it |
|---|---|
| Mathematics | Stages 1 to 9: Number, Geometry and Measure, and Statistics and Probability, with Algebra from Stage 7, and practice for both Checkpoint tests. |
| English | Stages 1 to 9: sounds and spelling, vocabulary, grammar and punctuation, reading stories, poems and non-fiction written for this app, writing, and speaking and listening. |
| Science | Stages 1 to 9: biology, chemistry, physics, and Earth and space, with thinking and working scientifically. Stage 5 was written without Cambridge's own list for that stage, and says so. |
Tap a lesson and its pages appear one at a time β Next page and Back move between them. On the last page, Start the drill appears (and Start the writing task where the lesson has one). A learner who already knows the lesson can skip straight there from any page.
| Kind | What the learner does |
|---|---|
| Choose the answer | Taps one of three or four answers. The wrong answers are the traps the examination really sets, so guessing does not pay. |
| Type the answer | Types a word, a few words or a number, then taps Check. The word limit is printed under the box. |
As the examination marks them. Spelling counts, and an answer with more words than the limit is wrong even when the words are right. Capital letters and spare spaces do not matter. Where the examination accepts more than one form β British or American spelling, a number in figures or in words β every accepted form is shown after the answer.
A reading question shows its passage in a box above the answers. The box scrolls on its own, so the question and the answers stay close by; tap its title to fold it away.
After every answer, right or wrong, the app shows the right answer and why it is right, usually pointing to the words in the passage or recording. Nothing moves on by itself.
About four in ten questions in a round are drawn from what that learner has missed before. Mixed revision on the home screen draws questions from every lesson started.
β² Back to the contentsAt Stages 1 and 2 a child is only beginning to read. A grown-up should sit beside them, read each page and question aloud, and let the child choose. In the English lessons, say the sound a letter makes (c says k, as in cat) as well as its name.
There are no recordings in this app yet: nothing is played aloud, so no voice needs to be set up on the phone.
β² Back to the contentsA writing task shows the question exactly as the examination would, how long to spend and how many words to write.
The model answer is one good way to answer, not the only one, and the checklist is for the learner's own judgement. The app never gives a mark for writing.
Reports, Settings, Support and the class dashboard sit behind a multiplication question. It is not security; it simply stops a report or a setting being changed by accident.
Points, drills done, best score and the day streak sit at the top. Below them, Go straight to a part has a button for every part. Each lesson tile shows how many pages and questions it has, whether it has a writing task or speaking practice, and β once done β the percentage right or a tick for the task.
My chart shows scores over time and a board of every lesson, green where it is secure. Questions I miss lists the questions this learner gets wrong most often, with a button to practise exactly those.
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Questions per round | 5, 10, 15 or 20. A lesson's drill never repeats a question to fill a round. |
| Way of speaking and voice | Which accent and voice read the questions, models and recordings. If a voice is hard to make out, choose another and press Hear this voice. |
| Speed of the listening recordings | Slower to learn from, normal, or a little faster. |
| Sounds | Turns the tones off. Recordings still play when asked for. |
| Animations | Turns off movement. |
| Bring back questions I missed more often | Weaves past mistakes back into rounds. Leave it on. |
The report is written from the learner's own recorded answers: drills done, accuracy, each part and each lesson, a chart, the questions missed most with the point each one teaches, and recommendations. You can print it, save it as a PDF, email it or send it on WhatsApp. It is not a Checkpoint result. Only Cambridge's own tests give one.
With a class licence, the teacher's dashboard shows every learner on the device, sorted so whoever needs attention comes first. A teacher using Wake Mark.Book.Ap can bring the weekly drill marks into their mark book. Writing is sent to the teacher with the button on each writing task.
β² Back to the contentsA licence belongs to the household or the classroom, not to one learner. A family paying for three learners is never asked to pay again for the second.
Schools can receive a code after payment. Enter it on the plans screen. You need internet for this one step: a code is checked with our server the first time it is used. After that the app works with no internet, for as long as the plan lasts.
Each Wake app has its own codes, and a code for one app will not open another. If the wrong one is entered, the app says which app the code belongs to.
A warning appears a few days before. When it ends, nothing is deleted β the learner's whole history stays and returns the moment the plan is renewed.
β² Back to the contentsLook at the accepted answers shown: the usual cause is a spelling, a plural, or one word too many β all of which the examination marks wrong too. If you are sure the app is wrong, tell us through Support, saying which lesson and question.
Almost always the browser's data was cleared, or the app was opened in a different browser. Results live in the browser that made them. Restore from a backup β see the next chapter.
Close every tab of the app and open it again, with internet on.
β² Back to the contentsEvery result and every piece of writing lives in this browser on this device, and nowhere else. Nothing is uploaded to us. That keeps a learner's work private β and it means that clearing the browser, changing phone or reinstalling will lose it unless you have saved a backup. Recordings are never kept at all.
Settings β Save a backup writes a small file to the device. Email it to yourself and it is safe. To bring it back: Settings β Restore from a backup. If the learner already exists on the device, the copy with more history is kept.
Settings β Clear results wipes that learner's scores but keeps the learner and the subscription. Settings β Erase this pupil removes the learner and everything they did. It cannot be undone, so save a backup first.
