Chapter 1

What this app is for

Biology is the study of living things β€” how a cell works, how a body stays alive, how plants feed the world, how living things pass on what they are to their young, and how they depend on one another. This app teaches it one short lesson at a time, with a drill after every lesson and an explanation after every answer.

It is for learners of about twelve and over, adults included. Each examination course has its own parts, written at that course's level. The courses are being written now, in this order:

What the app does not do

It does not send anything to an AI service or anywhere else. It does not copy past examination papers: its questions are its own, written on the same topics. It does not replace practical work β€” looking down a microscope, testing a leaf for starch β€” which every one of these courses expects. And its report describes work done in the app; it is not an examination result.

Have a calculator ready

Most of biology is words and pictures, but some questions need a short calculation β€” a magnification, a percentage change, a ratio of offspring. The numbers are chosen to work out neatly, but a calculator and a piece of paper help.

Chapter 2

Getting started

Put it on your home screen

The app runs in a web browser, but it is meant to live on the home screen like any other app. On Android, open it in Chrome, tap the three dots and choose Add to Home screen or Install app. On iPhone, open it in Safari, tap the share button and choose Add to Home Screen.

Once it is there it opens full screen and works with no internet at all.

This surprises people

Opening the file inside WhatsApp, Gmail or a file manager shows a preview, and previews do not run apps: the buttons will not respond. Ask for the web link rather than the file, and open it in Chrome or Safari.

Add the first learner

Tap Add a learner, then give a first name, an age and a picture. No email is asked for, and the free trial starts at once. Before it ends the app shows the plans; when it ends it offers a few more free days, once. A grown-up's email is asked for only if you choose to pay, because the receipt goes there.

Every lesson, from the first day

Nothing is locked. The lessons are numbered in the order the course is usually taught β€” that is guidance, not a gate. A pupil revising for an examination can go straight to the topic their class is on.

A good routine

One lesson and its drill a day, five days a week. Read every page, do the drill with a pencil in hand, and read the explanation after every answer β€” including the ones you got right.

IB Biology has 106 lessons and 1,060 questions, with 101 drawn diagrams. SL and HL students share the course: a lesson with (HL) in its name is for HL students only, and so are pages headed "HL only" and questions that begin "HL:". It follows the IB's own ways of saying things β€” osmosis in terms of solute concentration at SL, water potential at HL only, and both names for epinephrine (adrenaline).

Ghana SHS Biology has 122 lessons and 1,220 questions, with 81 drawn diagrams. It follows the new NaCCA curriculum taught from 2024/25 and examined at WASSCE, uses the names Ghanaian books and WAEC use (carbon(IV) oxide, potassium tetraoxomanganate(VII)), and describes every practical step by step with the result a pupil should expect.

Topic numbers

Every lesson that serves a course shows its topic number on its first page β€” for example Cambridge IGCSE Biology 0610: 2.1 β€” so a teacher can match a lesson to the topic being taught. A few topics are split into two lessons where there is a lot to learn.

Formulae and equations

Equations, such as the word and symbol equations for photosynthesis, are shown in a box, one to a line, exactly as they are written in the course.

Drawn pictures

A lesson that needs a picture has one, drawn under the words on that page with a line underneath saying what it shows.

The pictures are drawn by the app itself rather than downloaded, so they cost nothing to fetch, they appear with the connection dead, and they stay sharp whether the app is on a small phone or a projector.

Chapter 4

How a lesson and its drill work

Read the pages

Tap a lesson and its pages appear one at a time β€” Next page and Back move between them. On the last page, Start the drill appears. A learner who already knows the lesson can tap I know this β€” go straight to the drill from any page.

Two kinds of question

KindWhat the learner does
Choose the answer Reads the question, works it out, and taps one of four answers. The wrong answers are the mistakes pupils really make β€” forgetting a square, mixing up sine and cosine, leaving out a direction β€” so guessing does not pay.
Put the steps in order Taps the steps of a method β€” solving a projectile problem, for example β€” in the right order. Each right step is numbered; the first wrong tap ends the question and the right order is shown.

Paper to work it out on

Calculations are worked out on paper, so any question with numbers in it has a yellow pencil button in its top corner. Tapping it opens a sheet of squared paper with the question written across the top. The learner writes on it with a finger or a pen β€” Rubber takes a stroke away, Undo takes back the last one, Clear wipes the sheet β€” and Back to the question returns to the answers. Nothing written there is saved or marked: the paper is wiped when the next question comes, exactly as a rough sheet is. On a phone with a stylus, a hand resting on the screen will not draw.

Why it is right β€” every time

After every answer, right or wrong, the app shows the right answer and why it is right, usually with the working. Nothing moves on by itself: the learner reads the explanation and taps Next question. A drill that only says β€œwrong” teaches a learner to guess faster.

Mistakes come back

About four in ten questions in a round are drawn from what that learner has missed before, so weak spots are practised until they are secure. Mixed revision on the home screen draws questions from every lesson the learner has started.

β–² Back to the contents
Chapter 5

The screens explained

The grown-up check

Reports, Settings, Support and the class dashboard sit behind a multiplication question. It is not security; it simply stops a report or a setting being changed by accident.

The home screen

Points, drills done, best score and the day streak sit at the top. Below them, Go straight to a part has a button for every course, and under each course's lessons Back to the list of parts brings you back up. Then comes Mixed revision, then the lessons grouped by course. Each lesson tile shows its number, how many pages and questions it has, and β€” once drilled β€” the percentage right so far.

My chart

Scores over time, seconds per question, a bar for each lesson, and the lesson board: every lesson, course by course β€” green where it is secure, yellow nearly there, pink needing more work, plain not started.

Questions I miss

The questions this learner gets wrong most often, hardest first, with a button to practise exactly those. Use it twice a week.

Settings

SettingWhat it does

β–² Back to the contents
Chapter 6

Reports, and using it in a class

The report is written from the learner's own recorded answers. It shows drills done, accuracy, lessons started and secure, each course and each lesson, a chart, the questions missed most with the point each one teaches, and recommendations. You can print it, save it as a PDF, email it or send it on WhatsApp.

Reading the numbers honestly

Understanding matters more than speed, and some questions take time to think through. A dip in recent scores often just means newer lessons are harder. Four or five drills must exist before a trend means anything.

In a class

With a class licence, the teacher's dashboard shows every learner on the device, sorted so whoever needs attention comes first, and what the class as a whole finds hard. It can also take a backup file sent from a learner's own phone, so home practice appears with the class. A teacher using Wake Mark.Book.Ap can bring the weekly drill marks into their mark book.

Sending a report

The app shows the words with a Copy button, and you paste them wherever you like. Copy first and nothing can be lost.

β–² Back to the contents
Chapter 7

Plans and activation codes

A licence belongs to the household or the classroom, not to one learner. A family paying for three learners is never asked to pay again for the second.

Activation codes

Schools can receive a code after payment. Enter it on the plans screen. You need internet for this one step: a code is checked with our server the first time it is used. After that the app works with no internet, for as long as the plan lasts.

Biology.Learning.Ap codes begin WG-

Each Wake app has its own codes, and a code for one app will not open another. If the wrong one is entered, the app says which app the code belongs to.

When a plan ends

A warning appears a few days before. When it ends, nothing is deleted β€” the learner's whole history stays and returns the moment the plan is renewed.

β–² Back to the contents
Chapter 8

If something goes wrong

β€œThe learner has disappeared.”

Almost always the browser's data was cleared, or the app was opened in a different browser. Results live in the browser that made them. Restore from a backup β€” see the next chapter.

β€œI see an old version.”

Close every tab of the app and open it again, with internet on.

β€œMy answer was close but marked wrong.”

The right answer and the wrong ones are far enough apart that careful working decides between them. Read the working in the explanation: the usual cause is a missed square, a minus sign, or a value left in kilometres or grams instead of metres or kilograms.

β€œThe learner keeps getting the same question wrong.”

Read the explanation after the answer slowly, then go back to that lesson's pages. The app will keep bringing the question back until it is right β€” that is practice, not a fault.

β€œI think an answer in the app is wrong.”

Please tell us through Support, saying which lesson and question. Every report is checked and corrected.

β€œEmail did something strange.”

Use the Copy the words button and paste into your email by hand.

β–² Back to the contents
Chapter 9

Your results, and how not to lose them

The part you must understand

Every result lives in this browser on this device, and nowhere else. Nothing is uploaded to us. That keeps a learner's data private β€” and it means that clearing the browser, changing phone or reinstalling will lose the work unless you have saved a backup.

Making a backup

Settings β†’ Save a backup writes a small file to the device. Email it to yourself and it is safe. Do this at the end of each term, and before changing phone. To bring it back: Settings β†’ Restore from a backup. If the learner already exists on the device, the copy with more history is kept, so restoring can never quietly lose work.

Starting a learner's scores again

Settings β†’ Clear results wipes that learner's scores, charts, points, questions missed and which lessons have been read. The learner stays, and so does your subscription.

Erasing a learner

Settings β†’ Erase this pupil removes that learner and all their results from the device. It cannot be undone, so save a backup first. If the subscription was bought on this learner, it goes with them β€” to start fresh, use Clear results instead.
